In his over 35-year career, tenor Roberto Alagna has added over sixty roles to his repertoire, all in performances which have made him the most famous French tenor in the world. Also, his taste for exploration has shown his love for lesser-known or long-forgotten repertory, via productions, concerts and recordings he championed. Even two contemporary operas have been composed especially for him.
His genuine love for an immoderate number of roles and their composers has made his discography as impressive as his insatiable curiosity for vocal art, one of the richest that exists: complete sets, duets, oratorios, operas, anthologies of great works, religious and songs. His most recent albums are Caruso 1873 - a tribute to tenor Caruso, Le Chanteur - fully dedicated to the great French Chanson and a recording of Arvo Pärt’s Stabat Mater. Seduced by every aspect of singing, the tenor has made regular incursions into popular music. His success in this area made Roberto Alagna an authentic popular artist.
On the operatic stage, his last appearances are reflecting all the breadth of his repertoire. Over the last recent years, he took on several new roles, e.g. Des Grieux, Eleazar, Samson. In 2019, he sung his 100th performance both at the ONP as Otello and at the ROH as Andrea Chenier. In early 2020, he stepped back into an acclaimed revival of La Bohème at the Metropolitan Opera – 24 years later and 30 years after his debut as Rodolfo. Late 2020 in Berlin, he made great debuts in the Wagnerian repertoire, as the title role in Lohengrin, which he sang there again in April 2022. In August 2021 he appeared for the first time at the Arena di Verona for two double performances as Turiddu and Canio. In October 2022 at the Teatro Alla Scala, he adds a new role to his repertoire in Fedora, marking his great return to the Milanese stage.
